Tuurlijk, Zelensky mooie lul enz, maar wees nou wel

"Netherlands’ tight fist now chokes Ukraine’s EU bid" kopte Politico gistermiddag. "The Netherlands is once again leading a charge [HEEEEEUUUUUJJJJJJ] of frugal countries at a major European Council summit, but this time it’s not common debt the Dutch are blocking but generosity of spirit toward war-ravaged Ukraine’s bid to join the EU."

Kortom, WE hebben het weer eens gedaan. Maar even hè. We hebben het hier nog steeds over Oekraïne. Het land waarover Transparency International op 25 januari 2022 (!) nog schreef: "Ukraine scored 32 points out of 100 possible in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2021. Our indicator has decreased by one point, and now Ukraine ranks 122nd out of 180 countries in the CPI. The African state of Eswatini (Swaziland) is next to Ukraine. Zambia, Nepal, Egypt, the Philippines, and Algeria are one point ahead — with 33 points each."

Je haalt dus feitelijk SWAZILAND de EU binnen. En het enige argument dat dit bezwaar weerlegt is dat Italië, Griekenland, Spanje, Portugal, Roemenië, Bulgarije, Hongarije, Polen, Slovenië, Kroatië en Tsjechië ook niet aan de maatstaven voor lidmaatschap voldoen, maar het toch zijn. Maar zelfs die landen zitten niet op het niveau van SWAZILAND.

En we durven het temidden van de (best wel terechte) Westerse adoratie voor Zelensky bijna niet te zeggen, maar de Pandora Papers hè. The Guardian op 3 oktober 2021:

"The Pandora papers, (...) however, suggest Zelenskiy israther similar to his predecessors. The leaked documents suggest he had – or has – a previously undisclosed stake in an offshore company, which he appears to have secretly transferred to a friend weeks before winning the presidential vote. Zelenskiy has not commented on the claim despite extensive attempts by the Guardian and its media partners to reach him. (...) The files reveal Zelenskiy participated in a sprawling network of offshore companies, co-owned with his longtime friends and TV business partners. (...) Before becoming president, Zelenskiy declared some of his private assets. (...) But the Pandora papers show further offshore assets that Zelenskiy appears not to have revealed."

Later volgde de 'verklaring' dat al deze constructies bedoeld waren om dat kapitaal tegen "pro-Russische krachten te beschermen." Nou, het zal. Maar is Oekraïne daadwerkelijk EU-waardig, of laat iedereen zich meeslepen door het acute sentiment?

En laten we nou ook niet doen alsof onderstaand geen thema is.
