We hadden onze klok erop gelijk gezet, en daar is-ie dan. Verhofstadt komt met een pleidooi om de EU te redden. Het luidt: "Only More Europe Can Beat Europe’s Nationalists", gepubliceerd op een website die voor de helft 'Syndicaat' heet. Krachttermen schuwde hij al nooit, maar nu gaat-ie next level. "If the EU wants to tackle the strains of nationalism that are undermining its very raison d'être, it will have to listen to people’s concerns and offer a radical new vision for effective governance. Otherwise, the nationalist cancer will spread." Hey, even rustig aan met dat taalgebruik Guy, we kennen iemand wiens oma van de trap gekankerd is, en die neemt aanstoot aan zulk taalgebruik. Maar goed, wat zeg je nu eigenlijk? Nationalisme ondermijnt het bestaansrecht van de EU? Wat is het bestaansrecht van de EU dan? Er was immers nooit een concrete noodzaak toe, het was een ideologisch hobbyproject dat uit verveling de EEG uitbouwde tot een politieke en monetaire unie. Maar, om je even op weg te helpen, geldt het nationalisme binnen EU-gelederen niet zélf als bestaansrecht van de EU? Volgens die redenering zou meer nationalisme juist goed zijn, omdat het het bestaansrecht van de EU versterkt, maar wij hebben er niet voor doorgeleerd en verdienen geen 300K per jaar. Wat heeft Guy nog meer in petto voor het volk?

Complete integration would deliver prosperity and better governance." Uiteraard betoogt hij dezelfde engnekkerij waar het veiligheid betreft. More inter-governmental cooperation simply won’t do. Europe needs a central intelligence authority with teeth." Brrrr, je bent een enge vent. En het wordt alleen maar enger joh. Some would say that more sovereign powers should be returned to EU member states. I could not disagree more. Dergelijke hervormingen versterken EU-scepsis meer dan wat ook, en de EU waarborgt vrede en veiligheid helemaal niet. Het bedreigt het, door natiestaten tegen elkaar op te zetten.
