Feestje. Guy Verhofstadt is afgehaakt in de race om So You Think You Can Martin Schultz. Nee, geen twee limousines en 35 man personeel voor Gekke Guy. Zijn liberale ALDE-fractie kon niet genoeg steun bijmekaar lobbyen om de aartsfederalist naar het hoogste ambt van het parlement te stuwen, dus schaart de fractie van Verhofstadt zich nu achter de conservatieve kandidaat Tajani. Ohjee, het zal toch niet, krijgen we weer zo'n Italiaan! Uw spaarcenten en pensioenen worden al op het offerblok gelegd voor de knoflokiërs omdat Draghi de touwtjes in handen heeft bij de ECB, dus het is te vrezen dat de Noordelijke welstand en welvaart nog meer naar het Zuiden worden gedirigeerd als ook het parlement onder een knoflookboy. Van de andere kant, Tajani is wel van Forza Italia en was ooit de rechterhand van premier Berlusconi, dus met een centrumrechtse populistische geluid zit het wel bloksnor. Oh, en hij weigerde zijn absurd hoge wachtgeld na zijn tijd als Eurocommissaris en dat geeft de burger moed. Goed, zullen we even de ironie over de tong laten rollen dat Verhofstadt nu een deal met een populist moet sluiten om de stabiliteit in het parlement te bewaren, ingegeven door - naar eigen zeggen - populistische dreigingen uit de VS (Trump) en het Oosten (Poetin)?

Bij dezen de OKDOEI-speech van Verhofstadt: Dear Colleagues, I want to inform you that I am withdrawing my candidacy for President of the European Parliament. First, let me tell you it has been a true honour to have had the chance to stand and go to many of your groups and to have debated this important issue with you. The last couple of weeks it has become clear that the politics in this house are hugely fragmented. I am convinced that if this situation continues, the European Parliament will end up weakened while the European citizens expect us to work together and find solutions for the numerous crises that threaten our continent. That is why I want to start working on a new, broad and pro-European coalition in the European Parliament. This is why my Group has concluded an agreement with the EPP. This is a first important step in the building up of a pro-European coalition to reform and strengthen our Union. It is absolutely necessary. With Trump, with Putin, with many other challenges Europe faces, it is key we cooperate to reform our Union. This coalition plan is open to all pro-European groups. It’s a coalition of ideas. To change the direction the European Union is heading. The agreement entails a European border and coast guard. A new governance for the eurozone to lift us out of the crisis. A European defence force to make Europe safe again. And we agreed also to examine whether or not a European intelligence and investigation capacity is necessary to fight terrorism and international crime. We have also established a new method to make this happen. Liberals will be part of a continuous, structural dialogue with the European Commission, because they, the Commission hold the right of initiative, they will have to make it happen in the first place. Also the role of the European Parliament in the Brexit negotiations will be enhanced. Finally, we propose to start the work immediately and to launch a reflection between the three institutions on the reforms we need. A reflection that must pave the way to a convention. So Europe can play a role of importance in world of tomorrow. With this agreement, Europe can start moving forward again.
