Liveblog 65. Iran claimt neerschieten F-15 en F-35, CENTCOM ontkent. Trump dreigt met vernietiging meer bruggen en energiecentrales

Zullen we er eens bij zijn? Liveblog 64 las u hier.

De bovenstaande video gepubliceerd door Iraans staatskanaal Press-TV zou aantonen hoe een straaljager (gezien het silhouet zeer waarschijnlijk een F-15) neergeschoten wordt. Wat er echt vooral te zien lijkt is een succesvolle inzet van flares en een vliegtuig dat weet te ontsnappen. De vorige keer op 18 maart dat Iran zo'n video publiceerde betrof het een explosie nabij een F-35, die vervolgens wel verder vloog en een noodlanding wist te maken op in geallieerd gebied. Ook claimt Iraanse staatszender Mehr News dat er gisteren """opnieuw""" een F-35 is neergeschoten en publiceert deze vermeende foto's: "A second US fifth-generation F-35 was struck and downed over central Iran. Given the massive explosion on impact and during the crash, the pilot is unlikely to have ejected." Op een van die foto's staat een deel van het kenmerkende "US Airforce In Europe", en lijken juist eerder op de verticale en horizontale staartvinnen van een F-15, maar het is onduidelijk of de foto's authentiek zijn. De markeringen lijken echter wel overeen te komen met die van Amerikaanse F-15's van de 48th Fighter Wing gestationeerd op basis RAF Lakenheath.

CENTCOM ontkent de verliezen overigens stellig: "CLAIM: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it downed an "enemy" fighter jet over Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. FACT: All U.S. fighter aircraft are accounted for. Iran's IRGC has made the same false claim at least half a dozen times." Het zou ook goed mogelijk zijn dat een F-15 inderdaad geraakt werd, maar met een verticale en horizontale staartvin minder veilig naar huis vloog. Een F-15 kan dat immers zelfs met een gehele vleugel minder, en bovendien zijn er geen foto's van een volledig wrak, dus dit is de meest waarschijnlijke lezing.

In ander nieuws dreigt Trump het geweld te escaleren en uit te breiden naar meer Iraanse bruggen en energiecentrales: "Our Military, the greatest and most powerful (by far!) anywhere in the World, hasn’t even started destroying what’s left in Iran. Bridges next, then Electric Power Plants! New Regime leadership knows what has to be done, and has to be done, FAST! President DONALD J.TRUMP". Het dreigement verwijst zeer waarschijnlijk naar het openen van de Straat van Hormuz. Afijn, we gaan weer live.

Update 08:18 - SecWar Pete Hegseth heeft stafchef van de Amerikaanse landmacht Randy George en generaals David Hodne and William Green Jr. ontslagen. "The Pentagon confirmed ​that George, who had more than a year left in his term, "will be retiring from his position as the ​41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately." The Pentagon said in a statement it was grateful ⁠for George's decades of service. "We wish him well in his retirement," it said. The department did not give a reason for his departure".
Update 08:51 - CNN schrijft dat volgens bronnen ongeveer de helft van Iraans lanceerinstallaties nog altijd intact zijn. "Roughly half of Iran’s missile launchers are still intact and thousands of one-way attack drones remain in Iran’s arsenal despite the daily pounding by US and Israeli strikes against military targets over the past five weeks, according to recent US intelligence assessments, three sources familiar with the intel told CNN. (...) The US intelligence assessment total may include launchers that are currently inaccessible, such as those buried underground by strikes but not destroyed. Thousands of Iranian drones still exist — roughly 50% of the country’s drone capabilities — two of the sources said the intelligence indicated. The intelligence, compiled in recent days, also showed a large percentage of Iran’s coastal defense cruise missiles were intact, the sources said, consistent with the US not focusing its air campaign on coastal military assets though they have been hitting ships. Those missiles serve as a key capability allowing Iran to threaten shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz."
