Mensenlevens telden niet voor Assad

Een groot mysterie in de internationale journalistiek, althans, in de hoek van mensen die weleens de grens over zijn gegaan om verslag te doen van conflict en oorlog, is de vraag waar Austin Tice is gebleven. Dat is stiekem niet zo'n heel groot mysterie, want die is gewoon dood., maar toch. Sinds de val van het regime van Bashar al-Assad is de zoektocht naar Tice of zijn lichaam weer wat geïntensiveerd: waar is de fotojournalist (onder meer Washington Post en CBS) toch gebleven? Moeder Debra Tice ging zelfs op bezoek bij Ahmed al-Sharaa (!, foto boven) om aandacht te vragen voor de zaak. WELNU, een week of twee geleden werd door de BBC definitief duidelijk dat Tice, die in 2012 op zijn 31ste verdween, destijds (inderdaad) gevangen is gezet: "A video posted online showed him blindfolded and with his hands bound being forced to recite an Islamic declaration of faith by a group of armed men." De BBC gaat nu nog wat verder.

Volgens ongezellige snuiter Bassam al-Hassan, hoge pief bij de Syrische Republikeinse Garde en inner circle van Assad, is Tice dood. Geëxecuteerd. Al-Hassan zou de afgelopen maanden in Libanon meerdere keren met onderzoekers van de FBI en de CIA hebben gesproken. "During these conversations, he is said to have told investigators from the FBI and CIA that the now-ousted President Assad ordered the execution of missing American journalist Austin Tice. (...)  Al-Hassan is also understood to have provided possible locations for the journalist's body." Moeder Debra Tice, die tevergeefs geprobeerd heeft in contact te komen met Al-Hassan, gelooft het niet. "When asked about the claims by Al Hassan, she said her feeling was that he 'fed the FBI a story that they wanted to hear' to help them close the case. Debra Tice has led a tireless and determined campaign to bring her son home and remains committed to finding him. She told the BBC: 'I am his mother, I still believe that my son is alive and that he will walk free'." Och arme.
